Herb & Dorothy

Director: Megumi Sasaki, Genre: Documentary, Year: 2008, Duration: 87 min.

The amazing story of the couple who redefined collectorship. In the documentary with many awards, we witness one of the most extraordinary collections of the 20th century created by a couple, a postman and his librarian wife. The New Yorker couple whose interest in art begins with painting lessons is carried to the level of collectorship thanks to their friendship with artists, and they begin collecting artworks with a portion of their modest monthly stipends. Once their collection reaches 4782 pieces ranging from Picasso to Chamberlain and they experience shortage of space, they donate 2500 artworks to Washington National Gallery of Art. Herb & Dorothy are a proof that collectorship is not only about wealth, and that everyone can become a collector.
